"This design is a great combination of cost, performance, and noise reduction in a small wind turbine." NREL, on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy's Wind Technology Program, has been a partner with Southwest Windpower on the development of the Skystream wind turbine since 1999.

Skystream is a fully-integrated wind generator "appliance" designed specifically for the grid-connected residential market. Skystream is a streamlined, plug-and-play technology with no battery or external electronics required that connects directly to the home. When the wind is not blowing, the home is powered by the electric utility. When the wind is blowing, the Skystream delivers power to the house and sends any unused power into the electric grid. This causes the electric meter to spin backwards and allows homeowners to receive a credit on their electric bill, if the utility allows "net metering."

Electric utilities require UL certification for all inverters that feed power into the electric grid. The inverter inside Southwest Windpower's Skystream was granted UL certification for compliance with standard UL1741 / IEEE1547 after passing a series of tests. UL tests include anti-islanding, automatic power export cessation in response to grid variations, moisture immunity, electrical hazard risk elimination, safe operation during electrical surge, elevated temperature operation, and safe design and construction. TRUE GRID TIE TURBINE VS. WILD AC  OR  DC POWER.  Why is the Skystream (no traditional maintenance /designed to last over 20 years )inverter located in the nacelle (next to AC alternator)?  Very simple.. DC power or Wild AC power loss over distance (long wire runs), poor low wind speed performance (wild AC dips in voltage)and increased loss with changing weather conditions. Have you seen car lights dim? The number of DC wire connections must be considered as well (Alternator, Yaw Brushes, Tower Base, Controller, Dump Load, Four Internal DC Breaker Connections, and Inverter. Have you looked at your battery terminals?  DC is not made for long distance runs with multiple connection points exposed to outdoor air! Both wild AC (voltage rise and dips) power and DC power require very expensive, very large wire in order to deliver power to remote 3rd party inverters with separate warranties (installed in your garage or attached to your house). Wild AC voltage is unregulated, when the voltage drops wire impendence changes thus losing some of the power harvested at the alternator. If you see turbines with external inverters installed, then you could be looking at wild AC power.

TOWER HEIGHT AND TYPE:  Crane, Gin Pole or Bucket Truck?  Much has been said about residential wind turbines in regard to severe weather and maintenance.  We have weighed installation equipment, labor and maintenance requirements required by manufactures (over 275 installed).  The labor required to safely manage the lifting process of a gin pole takes about 4-6 men.  The labor required for cranes is the same (operator, ground man and two in the free swinging basket) . We have found that a stable platform provided by a bucket truck is the fastest, most economical and safest way to install and service residential wind turbines.  All of our towers are engineered and can withstand weather.
